Robotic Radiosurgery: The CyberKnife
The CyberKnife guarantees state-of-the-art therapies for treatment of many types of tumors with sub-millimeter precision. At the same time, the technology ensures a maximum of patient comfort. Advanced digital image acquisition and the robot-controlled linear accelerator make the CyberKnife a precise instrument that never loses sight of the tumor.
It is the only system worldwide that is able to detect changes in body movement that result from changes in the breathing pattern. An integrated computer control system detects and compensates for these changes in movement during irradiation. The “razor sharp” high-energy rays of the CyberKnife produce minimum stress on healthy organs and result in a maximum of effectiveness in the treatment of many tumor types.
More than 100,000 patients worldwide have been treated with the CyberKnife so far, and 25,000 alone in 2010. These involved treatment of brain, spinal, liver, and lung tumors, as well as treatment of several cases of prostate and pancreatic cancers. Benign diseases, such as acoustic neuromas, trigeminal neuralgia and arteriovenous malformations, are also often treated with the Cyber Knife.
