First Interdisciplinary Male Health Center

The “stronger sex” is vulnerable after all… the one-day check-up for the busy man.
Berlin: Four ambitious medical practitioners, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Lothar Weißbach, the former President of the German Cancer Association, and now the Director of the Foundation of Men’s Health, want to advise men in health matters in Berlin’s first interdisciplinary Male Health Centre. Through preventive medical examinations at the center, we look at and consider why men have, on average, a life span that is six years shorter than that of women. Preventive medical examinations are still a weak point with the “stronger sex”.

Excuses such as lack of time and busy schedules, however, no longer apply. Thanks to our new offer of a one-day preventive check-up by a urological internist, the busy man can get information about his health condition on the same day. A personal counseling session is conducted by a multidisciplinary medical duo. According to Prof. Dr. Weißbach, this unusual collaboration is also intended to be a milestone on the way to a “new male lifestyle”. In his opinion, the issue has been neglected far too long by both the health insurance as well as the research industries. The male-specific feature of the new medical center in the Meoclinic Berlin is the combination of urological care and internal medical screenings. Here, the Meoclinic sees itself as a nationwide leader on the road to a genuine interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of male medical care. Prof. Dr. Weißbach, one of the leading urologists in Germany, explains why: “These two fields simply play the most important role in the health of men older than 45 years. We have based our offer on the most commonly encountered diagnoses. Cardiovascular diseases prevail here. Then there is benign prostate enlargement — which affects every other man over 50 — as well as erectile dysfunction, urinary problems and prostate cancer. Often, the first indication of a cardiovascular disease is expressed in urological complaints. We know that 50% of men with erectile dysfunction are, for example, also in need of treatment for high blood pressure and live with the acute risk of a heart attack or stroke.”

The internists Dr. Michael Mocny and Prof. Dr. Lothar Weißbach know what they are talking about: two years ago they opened the first nationwide male health center in the EuromedClinic in Fuerth and since then, they have already examined about 600 men.

The mitigation strategy of some men in dealing with their own health is actually incomprehensible, says Dr. Mocny, because all tests are completely painless. However, state health insurance pays for a complete prostate cancer screening only if the “palpation test” shows any abnormalities. From a medical point of view, this is inefficient and often too late. The co-founder of Berlin’s Male Health Centre Dr. Jörg Schröder and PD Dr. Frank King agree. Their newly developed one-day checkup therefore covers all the important ultrasound examinations of major organs, such as color ultrasound of the heart. It also includes an ECG and an exercise ECG, a lung function test and spiroergometry. Other examinations involve the ultrasound of the prostate, penis and bladder, a rectal examination an and assessment of micturition and potency, as well as a PSA test (blood test for early detection of prostate cancer). Only a timely and comprehensive screening prevents subsequent prolonged absences from work due to serious illness.

In case of a discovered illness, a complete concept regarding required therapy can be created immediately, as the final personal interview with the patient takes place in an interdisciplinary context in Berlin’s Male Health Center. Often, recommendations for changes in lifestyle, such as less alcohol, weight reduction, stress reduction, and increased sports activities, are already helpful. These tips given by specialist physicians, based on actual evaluations, are as effective as any well-intentioned reminder from one’s own wife, says Dr. med Mocny, although, in his experience, it is often the women who send their men to the “Health MOT”.
